I was *very* surprised (and honoured!) to win the European Science Journalist of the Year Award 2025 on 24 October from the European Federation for Science Journalism. More on the announcement here!
Huge congratulations to the very talented second and third place winners Michael Peel, Jonas Reese and Christopher Weingart, who I had the pleasure of becoming friends with at the award ceremony in Bern, Switzerland. They picture also shows Astrid Viciano, who hosted the event, and Max Voegler from Elsevier, which sponsored the award.
I’m really grateful to the European Federation for Science Journalism and the Swiss Academies of Arts and Sciences for a fantastic event.
The award was for three features I wrote for Nature about the importance and challenges of using evidence from research:
Science could solve some of the world’s biggest problems. Why aren’t governments using it?
Can AI review the scientific literature — and figure out what it all means?
The science of protests: how to shape public opinion and swing votes
Those stories were only published because of excellent editors Richard van Noorden and Rich Monastersky, data analysis by Jeff Perkel and contributions from the wider, dedicated Nature team.
